“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” Luke 12:27 NIV
Isn’t it amazing how many beautiful flowers there are? Each species is unique and one is prettier than the other! Some people might say, “Well, what about them? They are just plants.” but I want to show you how much of God’s provision is displayed through them. And right from the outset I’d like to proclaim that the love and care, which God shows towards flowers, is nothing compared to his provision for us!
God’s Provision in the Growth of Flowers
According to Gardening Know How, there are 8 things that need to come together for flowers to grow. When just one of those requirements is missing, a flower will die. Everyone who tried to grow flowers will know this and it is the evidence, that they don’t just grow by accident. Instead, someone with intelligence and diligence needed to maintain their environment: God.
There are hundreds of flower species, all with different needs and all of them grow freely in the fields. This shows us, how great God’s provision is — both for the flowers to grow and for us to enjoy their beauty. Below, I’ve listed the 8 things, flowers need to grow and each of them shows the wonder of God’s provision and how much more He has blessed us!
Water And Nutrients
How many of you know that seeds won’t grow into flowers if you don’t water them? They need water to live and survive and so do we. Up to 60% of the human body is water and after just 3-4 days without a drink, we’ll die. Therefore, God provided us with a planet where 71% of it’s surface is covered in water. This water then evaporates and irrigates the remaining 29% of the earth. Through the sediments, the rainwater also gains nutrients which strengthen both, the plants and us.
This by itself is an amazing process. However, God’s provision for us humans goes much further than that! About the water mentioned above,
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14 NIV
This means that the natural water is good for flowers and our bodies but it’s not perfect. The water which God provides is for our souls and gives us everlasting life. No nutrients in the earthly water could do that! And on top of that, this new life won’t be anything like our current one because
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” Revelation 21:4 NLT
Moreover, all who drink the water of life will experience the miracle of bodies that won’t ever grow old!
Air And Soil
Flowers need air to breathe and a nourishing soil to feed and secure them. Similarly, we couldn’t survive without the earth’s atmosphere and its solid surface. Our atmosphere, with just the right amount of oxygen in it (too much is toxic!) provides flowers and human bodies with the fuel for our metabolism. But God provided us with more than that because
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 NIV
Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:7 NIV
This breath of life is only given to humans and separates us from the rest of God’s creation. We’re also the only creatures that were hand-made while all other things were simply spoken into existence. This shows us how much more God loves and provides for us.
Like the flowers, humans also came from the earth. However, using its surface as a nourishing and securing foundation is just mediocre. Floods could cover it and drown us and storms could rip out our roots. This is why God gave us a better foundation to hold on to. It is a foundation that never fails and further gives us all the wisdom and knowledge we need to live and resist the powers of darkness! The foundation I’m talking about the word of God which became flesh in Jesus Christ,
For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:11 ESV
Good and nourishing soil is also needed in our hearts to let The Imperishable Seed of God grow. This in turn will lead us to heaven.
Light And Temperature
In school, we once had to plant a potato inside a box with many walls that that blocked the straight way to light. The plant had to find it’s way around the obstacles to reach the exit which it did. This showed us that just a tiny amount of initial light is enough for a flower to start growing. Once it grows bigger though, more light is needed. In the same way, humans need light, too. And if you try to protest because you don’t like sunlight, I want to see you survive in the north of Norway or Sweden where it’s dark for half a year. I bet you’ll come back soon and be thankful for the sunlight and its warmth!
Well, no matter how great sunlight feels, it is not perfect. Both, clouds and the earth can be in the way and block out the light. This is good at night but God’s provision includes one light which breaks through every darkness. It is coming from the Lord himself because
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. John 1:4-5 NASB
Therefore, when it seems like the shadows or walls around you are blocking out every light of hope, reach out to Jesus and know that God Is With Us No Matter Where We Are! He will hear your cry and show you the wonder and power of his light by chasing away the demons around you.
Space And Time
Flowers don’t just appear and are fully grown from one instant to another and humans also need time to grow. We further need space as we increase in size which is why babies don’t stay in the womb until they’re full-grown. And since we see both, blooming flowers and adult humans, we know that space and time were given to us.
Sadly, people often take those things for granted, not knowing what is to come. They don’t realize that Jesus is about to return and pour out God’s wrath upon the earth. The only thing that holds him back is his love for us. This love makes him provide us with more time which is seen in John’s vision. There, the martyrs who are already in heaven cried out to the Lord for justice.
Then a white robe was given to each of them. And they were told to rest a little longer until the full number of their brothers and sisters — their fellow servants of Jesus who were to be martyred—had joined them. Revelation 6:11 NLT
This means that it is only because of The Mercy of God that we’re still here and have the time to make more disciples for our Lord! And only because of Jesus will we have all eternity to thank him for this because unlike flowers we won’t perish after a certain time.
God’s Provision in the Resting And Beauty of Flowers
As Jesus said, flowers don’t work for anything but rely on God in everything. He makes them grow and clothes them in a stunning beauty. God even provides for their reproduction process which is started through bees or the wind. That way, He ensures the spreading and the growth of his flowers without them doing much.
In the same way, we too can rest in God’s provision. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t work. It means that we should stop worrying. God Cares For Us when we seek his kingdom first and trust that He will provide for our needs like the flowers do it. That way we will see more and more wondrous provisions in our lives — may it be money, food, an impossible seeming job offering or whatever you really need.
Furthermore, the God who clothed his flowers in a stunning beauty, will also clothe you. And just like all the things mentioned above, God’s provision of “clothes” goes far beyond his provision for the flowers. You see, God clothes us in righteousness so that we may be found innocent on judgement day and be allowed into heaven. However, since God is just, someone had to pay the price for our sins. This was accomplished through God’s Son, Jesus. He gave his holy and perfect life for our trespasses. That way, We Are Forgiven Through The Blood Of Christ! And this forgiveness and the clothing (and transforming into) righteousness last forever!
A Testimony About God’s Provision
To show you that what I wrote is not just contrived, I’d like to tell you about a friend of mine. She had received a word from God that she should go to a bible school. The problem was, that she didn’t have any money. In the months before the bible school started, she tried to find a job to pay the fees but she didn’t get a single one. This made her worry if this would work out at all. Well, God had promised to provide for her needs and He kept his word as He always does. In the end, she received so much money through donations that she was able to pay the fees, buy herself a laptop and still had some left over!
This showed her that God really provides for us. Even through she did nothing but rest and rely on God, she was fully equipped to go to the bible school where she still is right now. And this very same thing will happen to you if you seek God first and trust in him with all your heart,
For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” Romans 10:11 ESV
The Perfection Of God’s Provision For Us
God’s provision for the flowers in the fields is perfect. Those needy planty have all they need to grow and lighten our days with their beauty. As should be evident by now, this could not have happened by accident and
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you — you of little faith! Luke 12:28 NIV
Therefore, trust in God’s provision for your life. If you truly seek God, you will see him work wonder upon wonder before your very eyes! Dare to give your life and (some) belongings to him when He calls you
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 ESV
