O Lord, what a variety of things you have made!
In wisdom you have made them all.
The earth is full of your creatures. Psalm 104 NLT
This verse is a wonderful description of God’s creation. Wherever you turn, there is so much to see; so much to discover! The diversity of creation is to vast, that we can’t even come close to fathom all of it. Many places of the earth are yet to be discovered and no man alone can know all we have found so far — let alone what God knows!
In this post, I want to speak about the diversity of creation and why it is a miracle. Before we go there though, let us first consider the viewpoint of evolution theorists — and why this doesn’t have to intimidate us as the followers of Christ.
“The Diversity of Creation is a Product of Evolution”
The sentence above is one which we or at least I hear very often. According to the post “What is Darwin’s Theory of Evolution?“, the principles of the theory of evolution are 1. all life is connected and related, and 2. the variety of life came from modifications due to natural selection. Over the years, scientists have found many things supporting this theory that led many people to turn away from God. However, there are still (and will always be) some problems with this theory, which is why it is just a theory.
The Theory of Evolution
Scientists claim that for about four billion years, the only life on earth consisted of unicellular organisms (compare www.bbvaopenmind.com). Then, for some unknown reason, they started combining themselves to bigger organisms. When you believe www.lifescience.com, the first multicellular organism that was created in this way was a comb jelly.
Following the principles of this theory, copying mistakes in the reproduction process of the comb jelly created all other fish. Then, again for an unknown reason or maybe because of further copying mistakes, the sea animals left the water and inhabited the land. Afterwards, because it’s so easy, they learned to fly and conquered the airs. Oh, and some animals such as whales apparently decided to move back into the water after living on shore (compare the chapter “Origin of Whales“).
Thus, evolutionists think that the origin of all species goes back to just one animal and unicellular organisms. And the whole diversity of creation was caused by simple copying mistakes that allowed the children to be better swimmers, taller or have better colors to survive. This is what they call “natural selection” and it’s pretty much what farmers use to grow food that’s more resistant. Well, with the difference that evolutionists claim that the natural selection of all species happened without a farmer who combined the right genes to let them survive.
To be honest, I used to firmly believe in his theory. My view changed after I was born again in the Holy Spirit. This transformation opened my eyes to all its flaws and the truth of God’s holy word.
If you want to know more about this fundamental change within, I have collected some testimonies about Being Born Again, which you can read.
The Gaps in the Theory of Evolution
Just let me ask a few questions.
- First of all, why would unicellular organisms decide to combine themselves? And how could they cover all the different cell types of a metabolism? Even if the first animals didn’t have a complex metabolism, at some point brains, nerves and especially reproduction organs must have developed. Where did those simple organisms get the skills to create such organs?
- Unicellular organisms reproduce themselves monogenous, thus without a partner. The comb jelly does the same. Why would there be animals with distinct sexes then? And how could the first of them have survived and passed on their genes unless one of each sex was created simultaneously? And why would two different but matching sexual organs have developed when sexual reproduction is disadvantageous to reproduction without external help?
- How could complex organs such as the lunge develop through copying mistakes when all creatures initially lived under water? There is no advantage in breathing above the water surface when all your mates live under water. And you can only escape your natural enemies when you have a fully functioning lunge as well as limps to walk on shore.
- Where did the inital animals get their food from? How could matching prey and predator develop simultaneously on accident? How could the balance of nature arise when all species came to life through mistakes? The movement of cats to Australia shows how a random animal in the wrong place can mess up the whole system, so how could they be in balance elsewhere with no one in control?
The Diversity of Creation is a Miracle!
The answers to all of the above questions can be found in the Bible. These answers explain all the things the theory of evolution is missing. Even more than that, they also reveal the endless grace and wisdom of our heavenly Creator! Just see for yourself:
The Origin of Diversity
Where all the diversity comes from and how the species could survive is described in Genesis 1. It reads,
Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened. The land produced vegetation—all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:11-12 NLT
Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.” So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird—each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:20-21 NLT
Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.” And that is what happened. God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NLT
The diversity of creation was the will of God and He made sure that everything was in balance. He gave each creature the ability to produce offspring of the same kind just like we see it today. Therefore, unicellular organisms creating a comb jelly is kind of far-fetched.
As for how there can be prey and predator for every creature, the answer can be found in the Psalms:
He gives food to every living thing.
His faithful love endures forever. Psalm 136:25 NLT
The Purpose of Diversity
Speaking about food brings me to the purpose of this diversity. Because of his love and care for us, God provided all of those amazing things for us! This truth, He proclaimes in the verses below.
Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” Genesis 1:29 NIV
“Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.” Genesis 9:3 NIV
There are animals which can just eat one type of food, but God gave humans the ability to eat pretty much everything. Just think about it: We can eat many fruits, leaves, roots, seeds. meat, eggs, milk, honey and much more! If this isn’t a blessing, then I don’t know what is.
In addition to all the things we can eat, the diversity of creation further provides us with everything we need to build homes, make tools and clothing, produce energy and heal diseases! And in his wisdom, God gave every living thing — including you — a purpose in the vast system of nature. He also equipped each creature with special abilities and made sure everything was in order.
The Diversity of Creation in Detail
A great illustration of this are frogs. They eat insects and slugs that would otherwise ruin our gardens and are food for other creatures and even humans. On top of that, without frogs we would lack some important medicine (compare blogs.ifas.ufl.edu). And amazingly, even though frogs exist in green, brown and even colorful, all of them fit perfectly into their environment.
Looking at the environment, you can also find many stunning symbioses. That means that even though two creatures are completely different, God has created them to complete one another. For instance, clownfish and anemone protect each other from natural enemies. The anemone gives shelter to the clownfish and the clownfish in turn keeps the anemone clean. And while bees collect pollen and nectar for food, they fertilize the plants for reproduction. That way, the plants can multiply and serve as food for other animals as well as humans.
Those simple examples show that although there is such a huge diversity on earth, there is no chaos. Everything has its place in God’s wonderful creation and nature is strongly interwoven wherever you look. This couldn’t have happened though mere accidents or mistakes in copying DNA. Instead, a mighty Creator was needed to set all of this in place. And this Creator no one else but the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the glorious Lord of Heavens’s Armies!
Holding On to the Truth
I am well aware that what I mentioned above is merely scratching the surface. The nature and everything in it is so much more complex than what blog post could cover. Frankly, it is even more complex than what any human mind could comprehend and that’s good! No man should ever assume he can oppose God because of his “brilliance”! Nevertheless, there will always be people who think they know it better than the One who created them. Sadly, their voices are often much louder than the voices proclaiming the truth of God.
Germany is a country where evolutionists are very strong, especially among people with a higher education (compare ncse.com). In my circle of acquiantances, creationists were smiled at and thought of as naive or even stupid, too. This made it very hard for me to step out and testify about my change of heart. However, in God I found the courage and the words to speak up. And in the same way, He will also help you to find the right words when you are defending his truth, because Jesus promises that
“When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.” Luke 12:11-12 NIV
Therefore, don’t be afraid when you’re challenged by evolutionists. Instead, stand firm and let God’s truth shine bright. Your voice can make the difference in the life of someone who is wavering! You can be the one guiding this person into salvation! Take heart, because you are never alone and no matter what your enemies try, they won’t ever defeat you!
If you are still scared, reading about God’s Unfailing Faithfulness might strenghten you.
May God’s word prevail and may his light be seen throughout whole world!
