“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 NKJV
With this statement, Jesus speaks against the flow of our modern society. He speaks against us trying to make more money and hoarding possessions; against fancy styles and even against earthly reputation. He wants us to put aside all those things and to keep our eyes on him alone. And when we do this, He promises to provide us with all we need!
This is a beautiful promise, showing the fatherly love of our God. But it also comes with a big challenge — a challenge of trust. Do you trust him enough to let God care for you? Are you brave enough to step out in faith; to keep your eyes on him and to see him orchestrating everything for your good?
I want to encourage you to try it, for God won’t let you down. The truth and reliability of his promises can be seen in both the Bible and the lives of many Christians. To strengthen your trust in the care of our heavenly Father, I would like to go into some details.
“All These Things Shall Be Added To You”
Before He says the verse in the introduction, Jesus describes all the things with which God promises to care for us. He explains,
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you — you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” Matthew 6:25-32 NIV
God knows exactly what we need to survive and He will provide us with everything. The nature a great example: God has given us both life and a body to dwell in. He has provided us with air to breathe and a multitude of things to eat and drink. When you look at The Diversity of Creation, you will see how much love God put into all the details of this earth. God cares for us with a perfect weather cycle that keeps all living things, including our bodies alive. He has even blessed us with eternal life for our souls through the sacrifice of Jesus!
God did so much to ensure our welfare and He will not let us down on our basic needs, especially not after promising to care for us!
If you want to know more about God’s forgiveness, I have collected some amazing truths about how We Are Forgiven Through The Blood Of Christ!
God Always Keeps His Word
Even without explicitly saying it, God would have cared for us. Nevertheless, He gave us his word to rely on. And God’s word never fails! This is testified throughout the whole Bible, both directly and indirectly.
One beautiful direct testimony is given to us through the prophet Jeremiah. He writes,
The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.” Jeremiah 1:12 NIV
That this is true is evident in the fulfillment of God’s promises to Abraham. Like foretold, Abraham’s descendants inhabited the land of Canaan and were protected along the way (Genesis 12:7 – Joshua 1:3-5 – Joshua 21:45). Another example of how unfailing God’s word is can be seen in the fulfillment of his promise that David’s family line would sit on the throne forever (2 Samuel 7:16 – Revelations 11:15). And one of the most important fulfillments, which is affecting our current lives, is Jesus sending his Holy Spirit to dwell inside of us (Joel 2:28-29 – Acts 2:1-4).
There are many more examples, but even those few show the sincerity with which God cares for us. He will never break his word; his plans are always carried out!
Further proof of his divine care for us is found in God’s Unfailing Faithfulness.
The above examples also point towards another important truth though.
God Follows His Own Perfect Schedule
God has his own schedule of fulfilling his promises. With this He teaches us patience, perseverance and trust in his word, the reliability of which is shown in the bible. As a result, there is not reason for us to doubt God’s word when He says,
“This vision is for a future time.
It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled.
If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently,
for it will surely take place.
It will not be delayed.” Habakkuk 2:3 NLT
So, don’t loose heart when you feel like things don’t seem to work out right away. God will make the proper things happen at just the right time. He won’t ever forget you and won’t ever come to late to rescue you,
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
Furthermore, even the hardships of our lives have a purpose. Whenever we are facing trials or are beaten down, we have an opportunity to see God’s power as He is holding us through or rescuing us. All we need to do is keep our eyes on him and trust him for help.
“But Seek First The Kingdom Of God And His Righteousness”
This part of Jesus’ promise seems to be ignored by many people. I’ve heard some claim that God doesn’t care about us. They also said that God doesn’t speak to us and that He doesn’t answer prayers. Please don’t listen to those statements, for God does answer prayers. God cares about us and He will also care for us! Otherwise, Paul wouldn’t have said,
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NKJV
God Cares For Our Needs — According To His Purpose
The reason for why God doesn’t always answer prayers is that we are mere humans who don’t know what’s good for us. We often run after earthly things and start comparing our possessions with those of others. This in turn leads to us wanting more money, faster cars and more expensive clothing. And in the midst of it, we lose out of sight what really matters.
God never loses the important things out of sight though. He always knows what is best and He wants to care for us and give us what we really need. David knew this, which is why he said,
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 NIV
When we start seeking God and his will, we will see great things happening around us! I can personally testify that God will answer our prayers and use us in wonderful ways once we start chasing after his purpose for our lives. Then, we will also experience the truth of Paul’s following declaration:
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 NIV
Thus, we might not get the fastest car or latest phone, but we will have everything we need to shine God’s light into the world. And this is all that matters!
Testimonies Proving That God Cares For Us
I know that there are people who are not fully convinced by the scriptures in the Bible. Therefore, I want to add two testimonies from other sources to show you the reality and reliability of Jesus’ promise to care for us.
Zenobius and Zenobia, 285 AD, Agaea (Cilicia)
This testimony is taken from the book “Jesus Freaks: Martyrs. Stories of those who stood for Jesus: the ultimate Jesus Freaks” by dc Talk and The Voice of the Martyrs. It can be found on the pages 261-262. (I am not making any money with this Amazon link. Its only purpose is to show you which book I mean. The link to The Voice of the Martyrs however, I highly recommend checking out. They are an awesome organization, fighting for Christians worldwide.)
How God Cared For Them
Zenobius was the bishop of the Church of Agaea and wouldn’t deny his love for Christ. He stood firm even though Lysias, the Roman proconsul, threatened him with torture declaring,
“I love Jesus Christ more than all the riches an honor of this world. Death and the torments with which you threaten me, I do not consider a disadvantage, but my greatest gain.”
Jesus Freaks: Martyrs, page 261
As a result, He and his sister, who tried to come to his aid, were fastened on a red-hot iron bed. The proconsul was mocking them by saying,
“Now let Christ come and help you, seeing you suffer these torments for Him.”
Jesus Freaks: Martyrs, page 261
Well, Jesus did come and took care of them. Zenobius described how God was cooling their skin, which made the proconsul furious. In his anger, he had them thrown into boiling water but the two still survived and continued to praise God. Lysias was at his wits’ end, because none of the other Christians had survived his torments like those two had. In the end, they were beheaded which usually wasn’t used for Christians, due to its quickness and painlessness.
What Their Story Shows Us
This story is a wonderful display of how God cares for all who put him and his kingdom first. The testimonies might sound cruel, but throughout the whole “Jesus Freaks: Martyrs” book, Christians could praise God while undergoing the worst of tortures. They were able to remain joyful and strong, because they trusted in God’s help and God in turn reduced their pain. They were blessed with the experience of the truth saying,
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 ESV
Through such great displays of his love and power, our Lord made those martyrs shine bright for his glory and many were saved around them.
My Testimony About How God Cares For Us
In comparison to the story above, my testimony is by far not as breathtaking. Nevertheless, it shows that the fact that God cares for us can also be seen in little things.
I Was Filled With God’s Energy
As you might have noticed, I love reading God’s word. However, there were times when I was so tired, that I wasn’t sure if I could keep my eyes open for even a single chapter. Still, my love for God’s word made me open up the Bible and give it a try. Before I started reading though, I prayed to God for the strength to read and learn more truths about him. And after reading a few verses, I felt as if I hand’t been tired at all! God’s word gave me so much energy that I even had trouble falling asleep afterwards! In fact, there were times when the adrenalin within me was so strong that I couldn’t help but turning on Christian musik and dancing and praising our God.
I can ensure you that his never happened with other things, only with the Bible and this blog. God just saw the sincerity of my request and helped me to draw closer to him or to spread his word. This is also wonderfully displaying the truth of God’s proclamation,
For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. Hosea 6:6 ESV
My Pain Was Taken Away
No matter how hard you try or wish for it, there will always be bad days, tirals and pain in our lives. They won’t always be as terrible as the tortures described above, but they will definitely hurt us. The good news is that
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18 NIV
This is something I experienced, too. Even in this one year of me being a true Christian, there were many times when I was hurting.
I remember several occasions when I was troubled because the decision of some loved ones not to believe in Christ. The thought of them going to hell was so painful to me, that I couldn’t think straight anymore. There was another time when I was lying on the floor and weeping because of a relative being in the hospital and close to death. And the most frequent pain was caused by the enemy. Satan is continuously trying to beat me down with lies, claiming that I’m alone, futile and broken beyond repair.
In all of the above situations, God consoled me as soon as I focused on him. Once I lifted my troubles up to the Lord, I felt that their weight was taken away from my shoulders. Through trusting in God’s goodness and justice, I found peace in my heart. And in this very way, God cares for all his people because Jesus declares,
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27 NIV
God Cares For Us — But How To Silence Our Worries?
Since I used to be a great worrier, I can tell you that simply knowing about God’s provision is not enough. Although I learned the above truths pretty early, I was still troubled with doubts and fears for a long time.
What set me free was the meditation on God’s word. I memorized some verses (e.g. Deuteronomy 31:6, 2 Samuel 14:14, Psalm 37:5) and said them over and over again, always with a different emphasis. That way, they became anchored into my heart and a reality to my soul. Consequently, I found the faith to trust God with everything and started lifting all my worries up to him. And He never let me down, ever!
Thus, if you are anxious or troubled with something, lift it up to God in prayer! He is your heavenly Father and He loves you. He knows exactly what you need and He will provide it for you, chasing away your fears along the way. All you have to do to live in the good of this promise is to step out in faith and dare to trust in God and to pursue his kingdom first.
